City undertakes demolition of derelict sections of Strand jetty

The City of Cape Town’s Coastal Management Branch will, on Monday 5 December 2022, commence with the demolition of the derelict sections of the Strand jetty, near the Strand Pavilion on the False Bay coast

The loose, deteriorated and damaged components of the jetty will be removed and dismantled in the interest of public safety. Work is to commence on Monday, 5 December 2022, and if all goes as planned, should be complete by 15 December 2022 before the start of the annual festive season.

The Strand Pavilion will remain open to the public during this time, however, a section of the parking area will be temporarily unavailable to accommodate the heavy machinery while the work is ongoing.

'We have obtained a demolition permit which allows us to dismantle and remove the derelict and unsightly sections of the jetty. Those who are familiar with the jetty will know the wood structure is beyond repair. We will remove the upright wooden supports, supporting beams and boards, all of the loose and rotten and partially detached boards and collapsed footing.

'Although beach access is not restricted during the work, we request all to keep a safe distance from the site camp and the Strand jetty. The removal of the derelict sections will improve the experience of those visiting the area, is in the interest of safety, and will also help restore this part of the beach to its natural state,' said the City's Deputy Mayor and Mayoral Committee Member for Spatial Planning and Environment, Alderman Eddie Andrews.

The Strand jetty, built in 1934, has deteriorated over time and has not been in use for several years now. Given the age of the Strand jetty – the structure is older than 60 years – the City has obtained approval from the South African Heritage Resources Agency to demolish the jetty as needed, as it becomes more and more derelict, over time.
